What is MELANOTAN-2?

At its simplest, MELANOTAN-2 was originally developed by researchers at the University of Arizona to simulate the activity of the alpha-melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH) in the body, which plays a key role in the darkening of skin and hair pigments, to stave off skin cancer caused by overexposure to UV rays.

MELANOTAN-2 basically has the chemical structure of a cyclic heptapeptide that repeats the action of the naturally-occurring α-MSH to trigger a process called melanogenesis, wherein melanin or skin pigment is produced. The more melanin is produced, the darker the skin will become.

This peptide is administered subcutaneously and considered as a tanning alternative without actual exposure to the sun, which also staves off the possibility of skin damage and even cancer in the process.

What’s really interesting is that clinical runs also reveal that MELANOTAN-2 has the capability of producing bremelanotide also known as PT-141, another type of peptide and active metabolite that has been seen to induce sexual arousal and spontaneous erections among men.

However, MELANOTAN-2 still hasn’t been given the green light by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for commercial distribution until now.
